Prefabricated cabin type combined equipment in foreign research applications earlier, in the mid-1980s in the United States has been applied to the overall modular 33kV substation; 1990s in Japan appeared in the overall modular 66kV substation also applied prefabricated equipment cabin. ABB launched the container type electrical cabin in the Middle East countries has been a larger range of applications.

In China 35kV, 10kV box-type substations have been widely used in the project, containerized SVG equipment, integrated DC melting ice equipment, integrated PV inverters, etc. are also widely used.

In 2013, the State Grid Corporation launched the construction of new intelligent substation demonstration projects, putting forward the construction principles of "standardized design, factory processing, modular construction and mechanized construction". According to this principle, in the new intelligent substation, there is almost no construction, instead of prefabricated cabin type combined equipment.

In the new intelligent substation demonstration project of the State Grid Corporation, Chongqing Dashi 220kV substation and Hubei Future City 110kV substation are AIS substations, both of which use prefabricated cabin-type combined equipment.
